WAL’s 2016 Lightweight Championships on ESPN2 debut Tuesday night!
July 18th 2016
The action kicks off at 7 p.m. EST on July 19 on ESPN 2. Hit the TV schedule at WALunderground.com for all the times you can get your WAL fill!
First up is the Lightweight Championships, featuring a STACKED 165-pound division. Here are 3 big questions looming around Tuesday night:
Will regional momentum last?
The WAL 2016 North and South Regionals saw a slew of upsets and surprise victories that have turned expectations on their heads. “Lightning” Luke Kindt and Justin “The ‘Bama Bull” Bishop took the South Regionals top spots with dominant performances that showed they want more. Sam Harris pulled a massive upset over defending Left Arm champion “The Assassin” Paul Talbott in North Regionals action, while “Iron Man” Tony Kitowski, largely an afterthought in the 2015 tournament, dominated the 165 field in the North. Can these upstarts continue to shake up the established order in the Lightweight WAL world?
Tied to the first point is whether “The Jedi” Janis Amolins and Talbott can become three-time champions on the right and left arms, respectively. Amolins suffered a hand injury battling Andrew “Cobra” Rhodes in North Regionals, while Talbott failed to take top honors on the left. Both pullers raised a WAL Hammer of Champions in 2014 and 2015. Will they do so in 2016?
The British Are Coming!
For the first time in WAL history, qualifiers and a regional were held across the pond in Europe. Now, scores of Europe’s best pullers are licking their chops as they chalk up and head to the WAL table to do battle with their North American peers. The 165 division brings British stalwarts like “Mighty” Paul Maiden, Tom Holland and Craig “The Birmingham Bullet” Sanders to the pulling table. Will they have what it takes to prove themselves on the biggest stage in arm-wrestling history? Only one way to find out! Tune in Tuesday, July 19, and throughout the summer on ESPN2 for more WAL action.
