WAL Gets New ESPN Air Dates

March 12th 2015

Hot off its expectation-crushing debut on ESPN2 in February, the World Armwrestling League this week announced it received new air dates on ESPN and ESPN2 that will continue its momentum and add more exposure to the sport in 2015.

With new air and re-air dates on both networks, WAL will first carve out a home in primetime on Wednesday nights and then expand its reach with additional showings over several months, for a total of no fewer than 25 hours of programming on the largest sports networks on the globe.

“The expanded air dates are a big boost for the league and the sport of armwrestling, and reflect the confidence ESPN has that more and more competitors and fans will migrate towards the sport,” said Steve Kaplan, commissioner for WAL.

Following re-airs of its 2014 Championships in March and May, WAL will air its first Regional competition July 29 at 8 p.m. EST on ESPN2, WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app. The second Regional will air immediately on its heels at 9 p.m. EST, and both shows will re-air the same night, at 11 p.m. and midnight, respectively.

The Regional matches are the culmination of WAL’s massive “100 Events in 100 Cities” showcase, where armwrestlers from around the country join a massive competition to find the nation’s best armwrestler. Top finishers in Regionals move on to the 2015 Championships, where the lion’s share of the League’s $500,000 in prize money will be handed out.

The WAL’s third regional showcase will air at 9 p.m. EST on Aug. 5 on ESPN2, WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app. The action will re-air that same night at midnight EST on the same platforms.

Once the WAL’s strongest competitors battle their way through the Regionals, the League will air a series of four championship competitions: one for each weight class in WAL.

Those events will air Aug. 12, Aug. 19 and then a close with a two-for-one on Aug. 26 at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. for the final two weight classes.

In all, the airing structure gives more than two-dozen hours of armwrestling coverage on ESPN and ESPN2, a massive jump for the League and further wind in the sails of one of the fastest growing sports in America.

“If you thought armwrestling blew up in 2014,” Kaplan said. “You ain’t seen nothing yet.”
