WAL Eastern Classic Rumbles into Philly, Titans Take Top Titles

March 28th 2017

The second in the World Armwrestling League’s 2017 WAL Majors series arrived in Philadelphia on March 4 for the WAL Eastern Classic, the hotly-contested “Liberty Brawl.”

Coming off a disappointing 2016, 2015 champion Storm Chellino roared back to a first-place finish on the left arm, and a second place finish on the right, in the 195-pound division.

Longtime foe Rob Vigeant outlasted Chellino to take home right middleweight honors.

“Easy Money” Dave Chaffee, who suffered his first-ever WAL loss at the 2016 Championships, beat out Shawn Lattimer on the left and Nick Zinna on the right to win the day in a show of force for the traditional right-hander’s off-arm. Currently, Chaffee’s ascendant left is sitting at first place in the SuperHeavyweight left category.

Competing in his second WAL Majors event of the year, “Wild Horse” Matt Mask beat Marcio Barboza on the 225 right division, while Barboza in turn took it to Mask on the left arm.

Janis “The Jedi” Amolins traveled from his native Latvia for the event, beating out the up-and-comer Sam Harris in the 165-pound left arm, while Harris beat out Amolins on the right.

In the women’s wars, 128-pounder Tatiane Faria took top honors on both arms, with Michelle Dougan doing the same thing in the 148 class and Angela Matthews dominating both arms in the 148+ division.

The WAL Majors series continues on April 15 with the Western Classic, “Havoc in Hollywood,” in Los Angeles.

WAL Head Ref Bart Wood said curious pullers and fans should come check out the Majors, as they are unlike any qualifier before, featuring big lights, awesome introductions and specialized prizes.

Chicago hosts the final Major in 2017, Midwestern Classic on May 13.
