WAL Announces HUGE Increase in Prize Money for 2017 Championships
Set to take place June 29 at the House of Blues in Las Vegas and broadcast LIVE on ESPN, the Championships this year will feature a whopping $236,000 payout to top arm wrestlers from around the world who will descend on the Mandalay Bay venue to battle for the right lift the hammer and claim the mantle of WAL Champion.
“WAL continues to push the sport to new heights. This large increase in the prize money available to our arm wrestlers is a result of the global growth and popularity that that the sport has achieved,” said WAL president Steve Kaplan.
The prize money additions will apply to both men and women competitors and raises the totals in ALL CLASSES and BOTH ARMS.
“We expect the increase in payouts to bring a level of competition never seen before, with arm wrestlers fighting tooth and nail to claim the payout and the WAL Championship hammer,” Kaplan says.
Friday’s announcement puts WAL in historic territory – since the inception of the league in 2014, the league will have awarded over $1,000,000 in Championship prize money alone. It’s a historic marker, and one that heralds a strong future for the sport in coming years.
