One of the top ranked pullers in the nation, Don “Hollywood” Underwood is a former pro wrestler and football player who discovered armwrestling after watching the classic 80s film “Over the Top” as a teenager.
He found a local tournament in Kansas City, went to it, and “got beat real bad,” the 42-year-old salesman says.
“A smaller guy beat me,” Underwood says. “He laughed at me. It made me want to fight him again.”
That drive has remained in Underwood’s DNA to this day, through all triumphs.
“It’s something that anybody and everybody can do, even if you’re handicapped,” he says. “The only way you can’t do it is if you don’t have arms.”
It’s a family sport, he says, and a brutal sport, one that goes back to the dawn of man.
“It’s something everybody can relate to,” Underwood says of competitions. “And if your eyes are open, you’re gonna be excited.”
